creating patches for Fantom (s)

Postby wakestyle » Mon Dec 28, 2009 3:41 pm

Hi, so far I have been unable to get patches to work for my fantom-s via a SM card. I have been able to create patches, but somehow not to load. I have used the 'load all' option on the fantom while patches are loaded on SM card, but still it's not working. Do you have any suggestions?

perhaps it's something to do with formating the sm card?

When creating fantom files, I know that you are supposed to drag the files from the right hand side, to the left but is it better to do only one at a time or would that matter?

I've heard that you can only place 1 fantom.svd folder per drive is this also correct?

Concerning Translator Windows, this is how it works, taking an example of a Kontakt file converting into Fantom-S or -X:

RIght-click on the .nki on the left. Convert As->Roland-Fantom. This will create a folder with the same name as the .nki, and inside that folder will be the standard Fatnom Bank folder structure (Roalnd-Tmp, with the Snd/Smpl folders in Roland and the fans.svd in Snd and the samples in the Smpl folder). The new fans.svd will have the patch created from the .nki, the samples will be in the smpl folder. You then put that on a memory card, in the root - that is the Roland and Tmp folders. Put it in the Fantom, do Load All Samples under Save/Load, then under patch go to CARD and the first entry will be the .nki patch and you can play it.

Drag from the right and drop it on an existing Fantom bank folder structure on the left. This is specially marked in Translator. This will merge the patch and samples into that Bank, like specified above

Drag from the right and drop inside an existing Fantom bank folder structure, on a Patch, on the left. This is specially marked in Translator. This will merge the patch and samples into that Bank, like specified above, replacing that Patch slot.

Drag from the right and drop inside an existing Fantom bank folder structure, on the Patch or Rhythm Kit folders, on the left. This is specially marked in Translator. This will merge the .nki and make it a Patch or RK (depending) , like specified above, replacing that Patch or RK slot.

Ok, I do this exactly as you describe to create the file/folder on my SM card. I can see the folders and it looks right, but I still cannot load anything in my fantom. I can see the all the files/folders using the file utility on the fantom so I know I got the card in properly, but when I hit 'load all samples' it's as if it doesn't load anything because it's as if it doesn't load anything because it instantly say's it's finished.

Using Fantom S-88, translator 2.9 125.

Perhaps you have a fantom file you could send me to see what's working and what isn't on my end??

thanks again.

1) Are there any samples in the SMPL folder?

2) When you scroll the CARD when Patch is selected (as oppopsed to USER, PRE-A, PRE-B, etc.), is the first patch the name of the instrument you converted?

1) yes i can see the samples in the smpl folder

2) no. All patches in CARD area are empty. Although when viewing folder in translator they ARE present.

When you say "Empty", what do you mean? There isn't any such thing as an "empty" Patch, but I assume you mean it's called "INITIALIZED" or similar?

Is there a file in "Snd" called fans.svd? If so, send it to me.

Are you using a Fanotm_X or Fantom-S?

Hi Garth

Ok I finally figured out how to get patches working for my fantom (and it sounds great)!

The next step I want to try is to add patches to my current .svd. Manual says this is possible, but when I am dragging one or more patches onto the .svd it is apparently over writing previous patches. Can you offer any help for me?

Thats good news then.

Just thinking more about the Fantom, seems really a shame that Roland hasn't catered at ALL to the idea of importing programs. They seem to have a 'one size fits all' philisophy concerning importing banks/programs. What I mean is it seems kinda dumb to be limited to 1 set of banks (128 presets) PER storage disk. Granted 128 programs may very well fill up all of the available RAM I guess they never thought/cared that that would be a problem???

I am surprise that even the recent Fantom G doesn't include multiple 'banks' or some sort of monolithic file that could be easily imported/exported.

Kudos to you guys to being the only business doing any support for importing into the Fantom. I hope that if you get the proposed feature (adding to preset bank) completed that will be quite good. I can't help think that Fantom popularity would merit it's OWN program for importing and creating banks. I could imagine a graphical layout on the left with the 128 preset locations and then from the right drag programs to which ever preset slot you wish and then be able to move presets around and edit them freely.

Well that would probably take a tremendous amount of effort but maybe it's possible?

We did put out a program (free) called Fantom Convertor about 5-6 years ago. www.fantomconvertor.com or www.fantomconvertor.org. I'm not sure how well it functions anymore.

Roland did put out a Fantom converting program designed to convert Roland S-7x programs in. They also have a MIDI Editor that is probably the best thing for Patches. There is a big deficit concerning sampled stuff though.

We are putting out a new Fantom Convertor, called Fantom Creator, shortly.

In the meantime, is there any workaround to compile banks of patches (up to 128) in which I could then convert into fantom format? My goal is simply to gather various patches and then be able to convert at once onto my SM card to play on the Fantom-S? Perhaps I could use a folder to gather then convert at once?

What are your plans for Fantom Creator?
